New president of Maori organisation has advice for Tamaki

6:40 am on 5 September 2011

The new national president of the Maori Women's Welfare League says the co-founder of Destiny Church, Hannah Tamaki, who was also vying for the role, did not go about things in the right way.

Kataraina O'Brien was elected president on Saturday.

She is a member of the Matua league branch in Tauranga and has been with the league since 1967, and has about 30 years experience in education.

Mrs Tamaki at one stage went to the High Court after her name was removed from the ballot, and the court ruled that her name be put back again.

Asked what advice she had for Mrs Tamaki, Ms O'Brien said there is a right way to do things, which did not happen.

Ms O'Brien says many members are happy that she's been elected.
