Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa says a proposal to build a huge wind farm could be an unwelcome homecoming for many descendants.
Genesis Energy wants to build a turbine farm in north Wairarapa, between Masterton and the Tararua district.
It would be built on about 3000 hectares across 29 properties. Up to 286 wind turbines would generate enough power for 370,000 homes.
A spokesperson for Ngati Kahungunu descendants with links to Wairarapa, Rawiri Smith, says some have raised concerns about the visual impact.
He says many relatives live outside the area and may not know about the proposal.
Mr Smith says Genesis has been open about its plans and its aim now is to notify descendants about the proposal.
