Meeting to map last stretch of cycle trail over private land

5:43 am on 1 September 2011

The builders of a cycle trail from Hokianga to the Bay of Islands are asking private landowners to map a route across their farms.

Far North District Council has built the first section of the Pou Herenga Tai trail using a Government grant and the Community Max youth work scheme.

A workshop is being held in the Okaihau Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday for landowners to suggest the best route for the next stage from Okaihau to Horeke.

Cycle trail co-ordinator Adrienne Tari says the main concerns are security and stock.

She says the council cannot afford to buy land for the trail, so it's hoping for goodwill from the landowners - Pakeha and Maori in the Okaihau, Waihou Valley and Utakura districts.

The council is still negotiating with Maori landowners along the first part of the Northland cycle trail, where the land was originally taken for a railway and never offered back.
