The Ministry of Fisheries is creating four mataitai (reserves) along the South Island's West Coast.
Almost three square kilometres of water will be protected from commercial fishing under obligations outlined in the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Claims Settlement Act.
The areas are Okuru Point, Tauperikaka Point, Mahitahi Bay, and Manakaiaua Beach.
Although closed to commercial fishing, recreational fishing will still be allowed in the reserves.
The mataitai will come into effect on 22 September.
