Auckland historian dymystifies local taniwha

7:45 pm on 21 July 2011

An Auckland historian and storyteller aims to shed some light on local taniwha, over which there was a furore during recent council debate about developing the central city.

Pita Turei is revealing the stories of the city's taniwha in a show at Auckland museum during the school holidays, in collaboration with the international company Erth, the creators of Dinosaur Petting Zoo.

Mr Turei says most Aucklanders have never heard the old stories about their local history and can get very emotional when they do.

He says taniwha are not myths but symbols of people's relationship with the environment.
