One of eight iwi involved in New Zealand's biggest Treaty settlement is taking legal action against the other central North Island parties for missing a self-imposed deadline.
The Kaingaroa forest near Rotorua was handed over to central North Island tribes in 2009.
The iwi - including Ngāti Whare, Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngai Tuhoe and Tuwharetoa - have failed to allocate the Kaingaroa Forest near Rotorua among themselves before 1 July this year.
Ngāti Manawa has filed an application with the High Court. Solicitor Kathy Ertel says the preliminary hearing will be held on 8 August.
The chairperson of the rūnanga, Maurice Toetoe, says the action is the result of some tribes not being willing to extend the cut-off date.
Ngāti Manawa wants the tribes revisit a mediation process in which a panel of adjudicators with no links to the tribes will determine what shares each iwi receive.
