Dame Nganeko Minhinnick dies, aged 77

The Māori community is mourning the death of a leading environmentalist, Dame Nganeko Minhinnick.

Dame Nganeko lead the charge on the Manukau claim in 1985 which challenged the impact of development on the health of the Manukau harbour.

She was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013 for her services to Māori and conservation.

Dame Nganeko has also been instrumental in several Ngāti Te Ata Treaty of Waitangi claims.

RNZ understands the South Auckland kuia has passed away at age 77.
