A survey of Maori business owners suggests one in five are planning to take on more workers and pay higher wages over the next year.

The research was done by online accounting software company MYOB. Fifty Maori small and medium enterprises were canvassed for their opinions.

The feedback shows many are cautious about their outlook for next year. Only 27 percent believe economic conditions will improve in the next 12 months.

However despite being wary, 20 percent of those Maori operators surveyed say they plan to increase the number of fulltime employees, while 26 percent are proposing to increase pay rates for their workforce.

The research also gives an interesting insight into the well-being of the Maori business owners. It shows 63 percent enjoy a better work-life balance than most, one of the highest levels of satisfaction with mahi.

The MYOB Business Monitor is a national survey of 1000 New Zealand small and medium business owners and managers conducted by Colmar Brunton. The survey ran in July and August 2014.
