Fund distribution still being planned

The Government has no plan in place for how to distribute a $30 million information, communication and technology fund for Maori.

The putea (fund) was made available when the Crown refused to allocate a portion of the radio spectrum to claimants, preferring instead to sell the sections of the broadcasting band to telecommunication firms.

MPs on the Maori Affairs Select Committee have been told the fund will support Maori economic development and Te Reo initiatives and increase Maori employment in technology companies.

Te Puni Kokiri said work was under way to develop plans for tangata whenua to apply for the money and for officials to check on how it'll be spent.
