A temporary Maori Land Court judge has been appointed to help ease the workload of the Waitangi Tribunal.
Miharo Armstrong will start a one-year term on 1 August.
Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples said Judge Armstrong had a great understanding of the operations of the tribunal, as well as a sound knowledge of tikanga Maori and the issues facing Maori land owners.
Dr Sharples said Judge Armstrong would help with the pile of work the tribunal had had to process since the retirement of Judge Andrew Spencer last year.
