Council plans to focus on Waikato River

Hamilton City Council wants the Waikato River to become a central attraction, which a Maori trust supports saying it's about time.

Residents are being asked to pick from three council proposals, such as developing an inner city beach experience as well as a river swimming pool, as part of the authority's 30 year plan.

Waikato Raupatu River Trust environment manager Tim Manukau, who helped in developing the council proposals, hopes people will learn they have a role to play in the health of the waterway.

He said it wanted people to go down and appreciate the river. Mr Manukau said it was about time people started turning back towards the river.
