Auckland iwi wants more sites saved

Ngati Whatua o Orakei isn't happy that only 61 sites of significance to Maori are to be protected by Auckland Council.

The iwi said the goal was relatively low, compared with the target of 2600 presumably non-Maori historical heritage resources to be protected.

It made a submission on the council's 2014-2015 draft annual plan.

The council has acknowledged the target of 61 was not high but said it reflected the complexity and resourcing required for the process.

It said the council intended to significantly augment this in coming years.

The council proposes an extra $770,000 in the annual plan for identification and protection of significant Maori sites.
