The Maori Party has named Rangi McLean as its Tamaki Makaurau electorate candidate.

Mr McLean, who is the Manurewa Marae chair, saw off challenges from the party's Tamaki electorate co-chair, Bronwyn Yates, and Hato Petera college deputy principal Te Hira Paenga to win the candidacy.

The Maori Party's former co-leader, Pita Sharples, has held the seat since 2005.

Meanwhile, the Maori Party has named educationalist and entrepreneur Susan Cullen of Ngati Maniapoto as its Hauraki - Waikato candidate.
