A Bay of Plenty tribe is expecting to hold its biggest Treaty settlement mandating hui on Sunday and aims to start negotiations with the Crown before the general election.
Ngati Rangitihi says the Office of Treaty Settlements has approved its strategy to begin talks, but the iwi is seeking more feedback from members.
The chair of Te Mana o Ngati Rangitihi Trust, Graham Pryor, says there are some dissenting voices among descendants, while others support negotiations.
Mr Pryor says the sixth and final hui will be held at Rangitihi Marae in Matata, near Whakatane.
The election will be held on 20 September.
