A scientist from the University of Waikato is teaming up with a Maori land trust in Bay of Plenty to turn its matauranga Maori into commercial products.

Nichola Harcourt has been allocated $165,000 by the Government to work with the Nga Uri o te Ngahere Trust on the new project.

The trust has its own unique indigenous knowledge in relation to how it uses plants and marine resources for health benefits.

Dr Harcourt says the project is about capturing some of the old knowledge that lies within the trust, coming up with new natural products and creating an agribusiness industry.

The project aims to advance health for the iwi and New Zealand as a whole, she says.
