Deadline for Ngapuhi hapu delegates

7:04 am on 21 March 2014

Friday is the last chance for Ngapuhi descendants to put names forward for who should represent their hapu in the iwi Treaty settlement.

Leaders of the negotiating body for the settlement, Tuhoronuku, have been holding hui in Australia this week to update Maori on the mandating process.

The nominations for 15 hapu representatives close at midday.

Tuhoronuku chairperson Sonny Tau says if hapu decide not to be involved, they should not be surprised if names are still put forward to represent them.

He says there is only going to be one settlement for Ngapuhi, and those who don't want to be involved have that choice, but shouldn't expect the process to change.

Hapu representatives will be voted for between 7 April and 12 May, and appointed in June.

They will make up part of the total 22 representatives of Tuhoronuku.
