Pakeha farmer doing it for whanau

11:16 am on 12 March 2014

A Pakeha farmer who manages two Maori-owned farms with his Maori whanau near Whakatane is encouraging other farmers to form partnerships with Maori land trusts.

Peter Livingston is the farm adviser for the Putauaki Trust's Himiona Farm and Ngati Awa Farm Ltd's Ngakauroa Farm,

both of which are finalists in this year's Ahuwhenua Awards celebrating Maori farming excellence.

Mr Livingston says he's been lucky enough to make the finals for the past three years and describes his experience of working with Maori organisations as amazing.

He says there are probably a lot of people who don't really understand how working with Maori can be extremely rewarding.

Mr Livingston, who has a Maori wife and children, says he's not just doing the work for himself but for his whanau as a whole.

Himiona Farm, in Bay of Plenty, will hold its field day on Tuesday, where the public is welcome to inspect the farm.
