Te Reo translators to be licensed

8:02 pm on 24 February 2014

Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Maori - The Maori Language Commission is focussing on licensing Te Reo translators, who will specialise in subjects about education.

The agency's kaitiaki reo and senior manager of Te Matapuna, Te Haumihiata Mason, says translators and interpreters will become specialists.

The examinations will be held in April and can be written, verbal or both.

Ms Mason says a lot of translation is needed across the education sector, including some New Zealand Qualifications Authority exams and Education Review Office reports.

The bulk of documents requiring translation come from Maori medium education.
