Mangatu Inc to wait for tribal move

7:33 pm on 3 February 2014

The Mangatu Incorporation plans to wait and see what other groups decide to do before making its next move following a Waitangi Tribunal decision not to return Crown land.

Late last year, the tribunal dismissed applications for it to make special binding recommendations for the return of thousands of hectares of Crown land in Gisborne.

It said there were competing claims by the groups who made applications, and urged them to mend their relationships and negotiate further with the Crown.

Incorporation chairman Alan Haronga said it had spoken with its lawyers and would allow the other tribal groups to make a decision before it decided on its next step.

Mr Haronga said it expected to have a strategy in place in the next couple of months.
