Slip halts wheels on kohanga's bus

A Kohanga bus carrying 16 tamariki was stuck on the Whanganui River Road for two hours after heavy rains caused slips.

The downpour lead to the river rising to alarming levels, resulting in the evacuation of low-lying suburbs, including Putiki.

The Koriniti Te Kohanga Reo bus was on its way back from a marae 45km up the River Road when a slip stopped it in its tracks.

Koriniti kaumatua and kohanga manager Wahi Teki says the bus was following another vehicle, which slowed as the bank slipped before it. She says the rain was so bad many slips came down as they waited.

Mrs Teki says there were four kaimahi [staff] on the bus, and the tamariki weren't scared. Instead, they were singing waiata and had their lunches during the two-hour wait before the slip was cleared.
