Year 12 students are being targeted by an organisation aiming to put more Maori into business.
The MaiBiz programme works in schools with a high Maori roll, teaching pupils about leadership, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
The scheme is run by Vision Training, which says Maori tend to shy away from the business world.
Director Mark Douglas said business ideas spring from problems students face in everyday life.
He said pupils at Dannevirke High School wanted to make an alarm clock in a mat, so they'd have to get out of bed to step on the mat to stop the alarm ringing, rather than just repeatedly hitting the snooze button with their hands.
Mr Douglas, of Ngati Pukenga, said the three day course takes up to 90 students and is sponsored by the Maori Womens Development Incorporation.
