Hapu in Rotorua are preparing for possible court action over a proposed major road.

The Transport Agency wants to develop the Rotorua eastern arterial route which will run from the airport to the city.

Ngati Uenukukopako is one of three hapu who presented a petition with 2500 names against it last week, saying the road will cut through tribal land.

Those hapu have driven the establishment of the Positive Rotorua Environment Society, which is split in to different arms including the action and funding groups.

Action group chairman Nireaha Pirika said the society was formed to gain funding so it can go to the Environment Court and fight for its concerns, if it has to.
