Maori cricket squad breaking new ground

The Northern District's Maori squad will break new ground for Maori cricket on its first overseas campaign this month.

The Northern District's Cricket Association developed the Northern Maori invitational squad initiative in 2011 to boost participation in the sport.

The squad starts a week-long tour to Rarotonga on 21 September and will play Cook Islands representative sides in a series of Twenty20s.

Association chief executive Peter Roach says the tour is a stepping stone to encouraging more Maori to play the game, and he believes it will raise awareness of the benefits of getting involved in such programmes.

Maori are fantastic sportspeople and the group will continue to push for more participation in the district, Mr Roach says.
