Changes are being made to the country's only kaupapa Maori intellectual disability residential care provider, which was heavily criticised by the Health Ministry earlier this year.
Te Roopu Taurima operates 50 whare in Auckland, Northland, Waikato and Canterbury and cares for 227 people.
Earlier this year, a ministry report found that between 2010 and 2012 there were 17 escapes; 14 alleged assaults of clients; two accounts of alleged abuse; and a fire.
An official known as an external monitor was initially brought in to see how Te Roopu was operating. The director of services purchasing for the National Health Board, Jill Lane, says that work is now being continued by a new chief executive with the help of another official called a quality monitor.
She says they're working to make changes to areas that were identified by the external monitor, such as developing policies around governance, staff training and dealing with complaints and incidents.
