Gisborne mayor Meng Foon is praising a local primary school for following local government rules to try and change the name of Poverty Bay.

Kaiti School recently presented the Gisborne District Council with a petition calling for the Bay to be called Turanganui a Kiwa.

The name was changed from the Maori name by British explorer Captain James Cook because it offered him nothing he wanted.

Earlier in July, students and teachers of the kura marched to meet the mayor as part of their campaign.

Mr Foon says the tamariki efforts are admirable. He says it's fantastic for the children to go through the council process, which he's sure would have taught the about research and how to write influentially.
