The Maori King has added to the country's best wishes to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their son.

The prince who is third in line to the throne was born at 3:24 am New Zealand time on Tuesday weighing 3.8 kilograms.

The Government marked the birth with a 21-gun salute in Wellington.

The Maori King has commissioned a special carved taonga to be sent to the royal couple, William and Kate.

His office says pictures of the gift will be revealed once it has been received by the Duke and Duchess.
