Changes to Whanau Ora governance

8:01 pm on 16 July 2013

Some major changes have been announced for the way Whanau Ora is governed.

The social service scheme funds providers to address all the needs of whanau in one, rather than through several different agencies.

The Minister for Whanau Ora, Tariana Turia, said on Tuesday the responsibility of awarding those contracts would be handed over from Te Puni Kokiri to private organisations - one each in the North and South Islands, as well as a Pacific agency.

A Crown-iwi partnership group made up of senior ministers and iwi chairs will also be established, and the current regional leadership groups will be wiped.

Mrs Turia said the changes aim to stop people from being dependent on the state, or on providers.

She said the job of Whanau Ora is to assist whanau to identify their own strengths and work with those to get results.

Mrs Turia said Whanau Ora should never be defined by the agency that delivers it, and that the leadership is with the people.
