Tairawhiti DHB keen on governance training

6:35 am on 4 July 2013

The iwi relationship board to Te Tairawhiti Health Board says it would have a better chance of achieving its goals if it was more aware of the Government's priorities for health.

The board, Te Waiora o Nukutaimemeha (T-WON), works to ensure Maori are represented and participate in the district health board's decision making.

Plans are underway by the Ministry of Health to develop governance training for each iwi board to improve its role.

T-WON deputy chair Lois McCarthy-Robinson welcomed the training - saying she hopes it will help the iwi board better influence the DHB policy makers.

She said understanding the Government and health minister's priorities when it comes to Maori health, and its disparities in the region, will help that.

Ms McCarthy-Robinson said it's especially important in Te Tairawhiti because nearly half of its population is Maori.
