No sign of end to Ngati Manawa occupation

The chair of a collective of Central North Island iwi says he has no desire to go and talk to the tribe occupying part of the Kaingaroa Forest.

A Ngati Manawa action group has set up camp in the Bay of Plenty Forest to protest against an ongoing failure by eight iwi to share forestry blocks among themselves.

The land was returned to the iwi by the Crown in 2008 but the tribes still can't agree on how it should be divided.

Ngati Manawa says it will never agree to split the land in equal shares, or any way other than by mana whenua, or territorial rights.

The chair Matt Te Pou said iwi have a right to discuss any allocation model. He said the remaining iwi are at the table waiting for it to be sorted out.
