Tuhoe starts to reconcile with police

8:00 am on 5 June 2013

Ngai Tuhoe says it wants to rebuild relationships between itself and Crown agencies such as the police.

Tuhoe signed a multi-million dollar Treaty settlement on Tuesday and as well as $170 million redress, the Government has pledged to provide better social services to an area it describes as isolated and deprived.

Tuhoe leader Tamati Kruger says it is time to bury past wrongs and move forward.

Maori Pacific and Ethnic Services National police manager, Superintendent Wally Haumaha says he was invited to the ceremony by Tuhoe.

The country's top-ranked Maori police officer says the gesture speaks volumes about the improved relationship.

Superintendent Haumaha says it will also help future Tuhoe descendants rebuild their confidence in police.
