A Massey University lecturer says it is important that young Maori are involved in the review of New Zealand's constitution.
A government-appointed advisory panel is reviewing it.
Veronica Tawhai, who specialises in Maori Development, was part of a forum about the review broadcast by Radio New Zealand on Sunday.
Ms Tawhai says Maori youth will get involved with the consultation process if they can discuss the efforts of their ancestors to contribute to the constitution.
She says her research shows rangitahi are not interested in factors such as how often they are able to vote.
However, Ms Tawhai says they are inspired by a wider, more indepth discussion about the history of the country.
