More water claims eyed for Waitangi Tribunal

6:30 am on 5 March 2013

The Maori Council says claims by Treaty partners to water rights doesn't end with the recent defeat in the Supreme Court.

Despite judges dismissing at attempt to block the partial sale of state-owned hydro power generators, iwi, hapu and Maori trusts are looking forward to further hearings at the Waitangi Tribunal.

Maori Council solicitor Donna Hall said the tribunal has already determined that Maori had ownership interests in water in 1840.

She said that was an urgent interim determination - and further hearings will explore Maori interests in water rights.
