Rangitane appeals to Turia over claim

7:33 am on 23 January 2013

A Palmerston North tribe has appealed to its local MP to intervene and help stop the Crown settling a Treaty claim with a local urban authority.

Some descendants of Rangitane have held a hui with Te Tai Hauauru MP Tariana Turia.

They've been campaigning for some time to stop a settlement going ahead with Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Incorporated, arguing traditional members of Rangitane are not represented.

The Rangitane people say Mrs Turia has given them no assurances, but has promised to take the issues raised back to the Government.
