The principal of Kawerau's newest school says more local people such as kaumatua will be involved, now that the local intermediate and high school have amalgamated.

From next year, Tarawera College will open its doors to cater for up to 500 Year 7 to Year 13 students, following the closure of the Kawerau Intermediate and High School.

Helen Tuhoro says the merger means resources can be used more efficiently and effectively, and the future looks bright for the new college.

She says it's important for the future of Kawerau that the Ministry of Education looks at how it can best utilise the school's resources including teaching personnel, and what input kaumatua and other people in the district can provide.

Ms Tuhoro says it is about providing a sustainable base, and how that will impact on the future education of students in Kawerau.
