Ngati Toa wants compensation for delays to settlement

6:59 pm on 1 November 2012

An iwi with Wellington ties, Ngati Toa, is to seek compensation for ongoing delays to settle their Treaty claim.

The Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust has taken High Court action to stop the Ngati Toa settlement from going ahead, days before it was to sign its Deed of Settlement.

It follows an urgent hearing the trust had with the Waitangi Tribunal last month.

Ngati Toa Runanga chair Taku Parai says the trust does not agree with the Crown's decision to offer certain land to Ngati Toa in their settlement package.

He says the constant delays are tiring and expensive, and thinks it's only fair that the Crown compensates them, or seeks costs from the other party.

The trust would not comment because the matter is before the courts.

The proceedings will begin on 12 November in Wellington.
