Port dredging plans appealed by Tauranga hapu

The Port of Tauranga says a Bay of Plenty hapu is appealing in the Court of Appeal against plans to deepen and widen the city's harbour.

The port wants to dredge the harbour to provide access for bigger container ships.

At the end of last year, the Environment Court upheld a decision made by a panel of commissioners granting consent to dredge.

Last month an appeal against the Environment Court decision, made by the Tauranga hapu Ngati Ruahine, was dismissed by a judge.

At the company's annual general meeting in Tauranga on Thursday, chief executive Mark Cairns said last week it had been notified that Ngati Ruahine was appealing against the High Court's decision in the Court of Appeal.

He says the company will be vigorously challenging the legitimacy of the appeal.
