New rules wanted for women's group after Destiny fallout

The Maori Women's Welfare League is being urged to be more careful when it sets up new branches.

Three wings are to close because most of their members are affiliated to the Destiny Church.

Three senior members have been suspended from holding positions of power, including the co-founder of the church - Hannah Tamaki.

The punishment has been carried out by the league's executive, following an independent inquiry.

A member of the league Prue Kapua says she hopes the rules of the non-sectarian group will be tightened up.

She says at the moment new people are generally accepted on face value.

Ms Kapua say the league needs to have checks and balances in place when new branches are established.
