Netball will be used to encourage wahine to live healthily and cut down on the amount of alcohol they're drinking.

The Alcohol Advisory Council has launched the 'Taihoa - ease up on the drink' campaign in Wellington on Thursday - a nation-wide drive to reduce the effects of alcohol on Maori.

Community leaders at the launch spoke about alcohol awareness and were recognised for initiatives they were involved in around the country.

Dame June Mariu has already used netball to encourage a healthy lifestyle and reduce the rate of smoking among Maori women.

Her project introduced an alcohol awareness policy last year.

She says there are many victims of alcohol abuse and it needs to stop.

Dame June wants the Taihoa message to be known throughout New Zealand.
