Maori trustees to undertake governance training

6:33 am on 1 June 2012

Trustees from 10 Maori trusts in Hawke's Bay are being given the chance to take part in a specialist governance training programme, which is the first of its type in New Zealand.

The programme is a partnership between Hawke's Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Office of the Maori Trustee.

Dr Karen Cooper from the chamber says the aim is to provide trusts with skills in strategic development, finance, investment, risk management and business planning.

She says the aim is to train trustees who currently have a purely advisory role and come under the control of the office of the Maori Trustee, so they can take responsibility at both a governance and management level for control of their own land.

Dr Cooper says the Poukawa 13B Trust is the first to complete a pre-training assessment. Over the next five months its trustees will take part in five one day training sessions, provided by a specialist Wellington based company.
