South Taranaki iwi oppose water bill before committee

7:11 pm on 31 May 2012

South Taranaki iwi representatives opposed to a water privatisation bill appeared before a select committee in Wellington on Thursday.

The Cold Creek Rural Water Supply Bill has passed its first reading in Parliament.

A decision was made to put it before the Local Government and Environment Committee before progressing to a second reading.

Four South Taranaki iwi are against the bill, because if it becomes law pipes running from a stream to about 400 people will be privately owned by a group of local farmers.

Taranaki Iwi Trust general manager Liana Poutu says she and others from Taranaki wanted to tell the committee why they're opposed to the bill.

She hopes the committee will put the second reading on hold and allow the iwi to explore other alternatives to the bill.
