Future unclear for Maori policy staff at MFAT

Maori policy unit staff at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade are still facing an uncertain future with the unit's fate in the ministry's cost-cutting yet to be decided.

Ministry officials have confirmed that, overall, 79 jobs will go in a restructure, as well as the closure of some of its European embassies, beginning with Sweden.

Under its original cost-cutting plan, the Maori policy unit was to be scrapped and a kaumatua hired instead.

But a ministry spokesperson says how the Maori policy unit will be affected won't be known until the end of the year.

The unit is the ministry's principal adviser on Maori issues.
