Kohanga manager supports Moerewa school

A kohanga manager is encouraging a small Northland school to continue thinking outside of the Ministry of Education's philosophy - despite the kura's board being sacked.

The ministry ordered Moerewa school to close its senior classes due to low NCEA results.

The school says it is being punished for being as innovative as movements such as the kohanga which aim to help Maori students excel.

Aotea District Kohanga Reo manager Ruka Broughton from Whanganui says he supports the school and wants it to keep thinking outside of the box.

He says learning happens over a lifetime, and is never-ending.

Mr Broughton says kohanga will always support initiatives which aim to help Maori children excel.

He says the approach is in line with the aspirations of the ancestors.
