The controversial Australian swimmer Nick D'Arcy has been cleared to make a bid for his first Olympic Games.

The Australian Olympic Committee has ended long-running speculation over D'Arcy's availability for the London Games, by allowing him to enter next month's qualifying trials in Adelaide.

The 24-year-old 200m butterfly specialist was kicked off Australia's team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics following his assault on former swimmer Simon Cowley.

D'Arcy was last year ordered to pay Cowley $180,000 in damages, but he filed for bankruptcy in December, avoiding having to pay.
