The American golfer Phil Mickelson has returned to the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time in almost five months.

The big left-hander has improved two places to 9th after his tie for second in yesterday's dramatic finish to the Northern Trust Open in California.

Mickelson was beaten by Bill Haas in a three-way playoff yesterday that also featured the U.S. PGA champion Keegan Bradley.

Haas has climbed 10 places to 12th in the rankings.

Tiger Woods who bypassed the latest PGA tour event, has dropped two places to 20th.
