The New Zealand cyclist Alison Shanks has had to settle for silver in the women's individual pursuit final at the World Cup Track meet in London.

Shanks lost to British rider Joanna Rowsell by just over a second in the gold medal ride.

Another New Zealander, Simon Van Velthooven, missed out on picking up a second medal at the meet at the Olympic velodrome.

Van Velthooven won bronze in the kilo time trial on Saturday, but could only manage a sixth place finish in Sunday's kierin final, won by British rider Sir Chris Hoy - the triple keirin world gold medallist and Olympic champion.

Van Velthooven qualified for the final with a heat win and second place in the semi-finals.
