First up match helpful for Proteas

The South African cricket captain AB de Villiers says their tour opener against Canterbury has certainly helped them prepare for the series against New Zealand.

The Proteas beat Canterbury by 20 runs in a Twenty20 match at Hagley Oval Wednesday, scoring 150 for six and then bowling the locals out for 130.

De Villiers says the match certainly got them focussed on the job ahead.

Left-arm fast bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe took a hat-trick to knock the top off the Canterbury batting lineup.

De Villiers says despite the opening pair, he was unhappy they weren't able to put some partnerships together.

South Africa play New Zealand in the first of three Twenty20 internationals in Wellington Friday night.
