The Wellington runner Melissa Moon was the fastest women in this year's annual stair race up the Empire State Building in New York.

The 42-year-old former world mountain running champion finished the 35th annual race in 12 minutes and 39 seconds, 34 seconds faster than the last time she won, in 2010.

Competitors have to run up 1,576 steps to the Observatory deck on the 86th floor of the New York skyscraper, and this year was the first night event.

The men's race was won by Germany's Thomas Dold for a record seventh time, in 10 minutes and 28 seconds.
