Skipper Michael Clarke and former captain Ricky Ponting have given Australia control of the second cricket Test against India in Sydney after the second day.

The home side racked up an impressive score of 482 for four, in reply to India's first innings total of 191.

Clarke scored his maiden Test double century and will resume in the morning on a brilliant 251, with Michael Hussey on 55 and 291 runs ahead of the tourists with six first-innings wickets in hand and three days to play.

Ponting made 134, his first Test century in almost two years as he put on 288 for the third wicket with Clarke.

It was Ponting's 40th Test century and he's third on the all time Test century list behind Sachin Tendulkar and South Africa's Jacques Khallis.
