Terry charged over racism claim

6:06 am on 22 December 2011

The Chelsea and England football captain John Terry will be prosecuted for the alleged racial abuse of Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in a Premier League match in October.

The decision comes a day after the Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches and fined 80,000 dollars for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during another game earlier this season.

Terry will appear in court on Feb. 1 and could be fined up to 5,000 dollars if he's found guilty.

Terry continues to vigorously deny the charge, and Chelsea are standing by their captain who is available for selection for tomorrow morning's game against Tottenham Hotspur.
