Cowan stakes his claim for test callup

6:34 am on 21 December 2011

The Tasmanian opening batsman Ed Cowan scored 109 for the Chairman's XI against India in Canberra yesterday, and now he'll play the waiting game and see whether Australian selectors call on him to face the same opposition on Boxing Day in Melbourne.

Cowan was well in the frame for a Test debut before the tour game and after the opener contributed more than half of the Chairman's stumps score of 215 for 7 from 59 overs, he walked off satisfied he could not have done much more to press his case.

Australian opener Phil Hughes scored 20 and Usman Khawaja made 25.

Cowan is vying for a spot in the first test, but he says he didn't let the speculation affect him in Canberra....

The Australian selectors are expecting to pick a squad of 13 today.
